Hong Kong Approves Bitcoin & Ethereum as Proof of Wealth for Investment Visa Applicants
Hong Kong has officially approved Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) as valid assets for proving net worth under its revamped Capital Investment Entrant Scheme (CIES). This decision marks a major shift in the city's approach to digital assets and aims to attract high-net-worth investors globally.
Key Requirements for the Investment Visa
To qualify for the investment visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Demonstrate a net worth of at least HK$30 million (≈USD 3.8 million).
Provide a valuation report signed by a certified accountant verifying their assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Upon approval, invest another HK$30 million in government-approved assets, such as equities, bonds, or funds—excluding cryptocurrencies.
Why This Policy Matters for Investors
Hong Kong’s decision aligns with its broader goal of becoming a global digital asset hub. With nine licensed crypto exchanges operating in the city, regulators are creating a controlled environment for digital asset adoption.
Despite allowing crypto as proof of wealth, Hong Kong maintains strict regulations—crypto holdings cannot be used for direct investment under the visa program. However, this move is expected to make the city a more attractive destination for crypto-wealthy investors seeking legal recognition of their assets.
Growing Interest in Hong Kong’s Investment Visa
Since its relaunch in January 2025, the Capital Investment Entrant Scheme has already received over 750 applications, showing strong interest from global investors. Experts predict that allowing digital assets for wealth verification will further boost Hong Kong’s appeal as a leading investment destination.
